How Fraudsters Steal your Money through Sim Card Swap.

Earlier today, a man by the name of Farah Bashir, lost approximately 2.6 million Kenya shillings to SIM SWAP fraudsters.

Farah Bashir was in Johannesburg for a work related trip when the hacking happened and he lost the money from his ABSA bank account on February 7th of 2022.

The 58 year old medical lab scientist, watched helplessly as the hackers withdrew money from his accounts and leaving them high and dry.

It’s reported that the Sim Swap of his Safaricom Sim Card happened in Kasarani in Nairobi County and by the time he contacted Safaricom about the same, money had already vanished.

It took the intervention of a friend who works at Safaricom to block the line in order for the transactions to be stopped by midnight on February 8 this year.

Only 500,000 shillings was recovered by ABSA and they have denied liability of the theft from his account therefore not liable for the refund.
